A purpose-built traditional vaka is being sailed to Palau to help island communities deal with the climate crisis.
The Okeanos Palau was built by the Okeanos Foundation and is expected to arrive in Palau next week.
The vaka is equipped with solar panels and coconut oil engines.
It will visit island communities and help with disaster relief and climate change preparedness.
The office of the Palau President said the foundation would operate the vaka as a corporate entity.
Ownership of the vaka would be transferred to Palau after half the cost of the vessel was recovered by the foundation, the office said.
