Many Wellingtonians had a rocky Sunday wake up, with a moderate earthquake shaking them up.
The 4.7 magnitude quake occurred at 8.13am, and was centred offshore behind Kāpiti Island, about 25km west of Paraparaumu, and about 28km deep.
Within ten minutes about 12,000 people had filed reports with GeoNet to describe the shaking, with most describing it as light.
Most reports were from people in the Wellington region, the top of the South Island, and Manawatū and Taranaki although some in Auckland and Otago also reported feeling it.
