Govt's position on kiwifruit hypocrisy - produce company

15:00 pm on 15 June 2011

Turners & Growers says the Government's position on exporting kiwifruit is hypocritical.

The produce company has had a second attempt to export its patented varieties, under a marketing agreement with Zespri, rejected by the kiwifruit marketer.

Turners & Growers managing director Jeff Wesley says Zespri is recognised by the World Trade Organisation as a State-trading enterprise, so it is not allowed to get Government support or have an advantage over other exporters.

But he says the Government is supporting Zespri to maintain a virtual monopoly on exporting kiwifruit.

Mr Wesley says the Government supports free trade, but not for kiwifruit, which is hypocrisy.

Mr Wesley says T&G was seeking a five year term. But Zespri would not consider anything more than a one-year trial into limited markets and insisted on a gag clause in any agreement to limit criticism of it.

He says Turners & Growers will not make another bid.

the government is rejecting the criticism from Turners and Growers.

Trade Minister Tim Groser says that while the situation may not suit the company, the agreement with Zespri is what is best for the New Zealand economy.
