Crown concludes case in Hemana trial

18:46 pm on 5 December 2011

A jury has been told a man accused of killing a baby in Auckland used violence to assert his control and acted with murderous intent.

The Crown made its closing statements in the trial of James Hemana in the High Court at Auckland.

Hemana denies murdering six-month-old Cezar Taylor but has admitted failing to provide the necessities of life.

The Crown told the jury of six men and six women Hemana must have known his violent treatment of Cezar was likely to cause the baby's death.

Hemana used violence to gain control over Cezar and also the child's mother, the Crown says.

He shook and dropped the baby on its head several times and inflicted the fatal injuries in just a matter of weeks.

The Defence will deliver its closing statement on Tuesday.
