09:20 am on 18 February 2015

This week in On The Dial, the perennial housing struggle for Auckland students, celebrating two-wheeled travel, we talk fringe festival, and it’s all fun and games in the gaming industry.

With over 40,000 University of Auckland students due to start a new semester in a few weeks’ time, the pressure is on for those still looking for a place to live. We head along to a “speed flatting” seminar to get some advice on the flat hunt.

Game development is an $80 million dollar industry for New Zealand – can that grow, and what about the professional gamers?

The benefits of getting on your bike are well-known, it helps reduce your carbon footprint, improve your fitness and, keep you healthy. However, cycling numbers are still small – just under 3 per cent of New Zealand commuters cycle to work each day, compared with the almost 50 per cent who opt for cars and the number of kids cycling to school is dropping. Sophie Barclay looks into some cycling subcultures.

And we review the latest in the Wellington theatre scene heading into the Fringe Festival, with Sherilee Kahui.

On The Dial was produced by Megan Whelan with technical production by Jeremy Veal and assistance from NZonAir. Our music was composed and performed by Eddie Johnston, and the cover image was made by Hadley Donaldson.
