Federer avoiding Olympic village to maintain focus

12:21 pm on 8 August 2008

Roger Federer is finding the attention from his fellow athletes in Beijing a bit of a distraction as he prepares for his last tournament as world number one.

His Spanish rival Rafael Nadal has knocked the Swiss off the top spot, which will be official shortly after the gold medal tennis match takes place, in 10 days.

Federer is set to carry his country's flag in the opening ceremony tonight, which is his birthday.

And the newly 27-year-old is determined not to let anything distract him from the gold -- which is why he's not staying at the Olympic village.

Federer's been swamped by other athletes - including the New Zealanders - on his visits to the village and he says the relentless attention cemented his decision not to stay with his team mates.
