The new Cook Islands government says the economy is its priority and it will hold a national economic summit within the next three months.

The Prime Minister Henry Puna says the government needs economic growth to ensure money is coming into its coffers to pay for public services.

He says the government wants to get all stakeholders together to come up with a way forward.

The Prime Minister says tourism has been the major industry in the Cook Islands, but that has led to neglect of other areas.

"Like agriculture and marine resources and our pearl industry and our small cottage industries in the Cook Islands, so our objective is to invest in all these industries so that when the economy does pick up again it picks up across the board."
