A homicide investigation has been launched following the death of a female infant in the Far North.
Northland Police said the baby was discovered deceased on Tuesday when they attended an incident at an address in Kaitaia.
Acting Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid, Northland CIB, said following a post-mortem, information gathered indicated the baby died of "non-accidental injuries".
A scene examination is being carried out at the address and police are making enquiries.
"Police will thoroughly investigate the matter and use resources from across the Northland district to ensure we have a thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident," he said.
"At this point, it is early days into the investigation however police have been speaking with a number of people as part of our enquiries."
