Lincoln University student Peter Klaassen has won the first World Young Shepherd Challenge.
The two-day competition in Oamaru last week, run by Beef and Lamb New Zealand, put 22 young shepherds from 11 countries through a range of activities to test their sheep farming skills.
The activities included putting up a permanent fence, riding a quad bike safely and counting and shearing sheep.
Peter Klaassen scored highest, winning the 'World Young Shepherd Challenge' trophy and a $15,000 professional development scholarship.
Second place in the competition went to Philip Derryman of England and third place to Lachlan Charlton of Australia.
