22:16 pm on 11 May 2021

Fiji has received further assistance from Australia to support the country's Covid-19 response and recovery efforts.

The assistance comes amid the growing number of Covid cases in Fiji, more than 30 are active and over 20 transmitted locally.

More than 12,000 surgical masks, 200 infrared thermometers and 150 boxes of facial masks were handed over to the Health Ministry this week.

Last week, Fiji received 10,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Australia through the COVAX facility.

In a statement, the Australian High Commission in Suva said its government continues to work with the Fijians during this 'tough time'.

The foreign mission said Australia stands by #teamFiji as "they continue to impress with decisive action against Covid-19".

Apart from the medical equipment, Australia also provided support for rental vehicles to assist with contact tracing as well as data packages.

"We donated over 350 data packages to support vaccination registrations and 200 mobile phone and WiFi data support packages for over 500 staff to enable a reliable flow of communication."

Tonight in Fiji, health authorities reported confirmation of twelve new community cases of Covid-19, all in Suva.

It represents the highest increase in cases announced yet at a daily update by Fiji's health authorities.

Fiji now has 48 active cases, 35 of them locally transmitted, and seven in border quarantine, while the source of six cases is under investigation.
