A new detour is now open around a slip on State Highway 35 in Bay of Plenty, between Opotiki and Te Kaha.
A section of road at Maraenui Hill was closed on Wednesday, following significant damage caused by a slip.
Motorists had to use a detour on State Highway Two, via Gisborne.
The new detour, which is an unsealed section of forestry road, is available for light vehicles only.
Motorists are advised to take care as the road is steep and winding.
