The director of the Pasteur Institute of New Caledonia, Vincent Richard said leptospirosis was often not recognised or misdiagnosed as dengue, malaria or influenza.
The Pacific Community's Salanieta Saketa said there was limited data available for the region, partly due to a lack of understanding and the complexity of diagnosis.
Twenty-one medical specialists from around the Pacific will have enhanced knowledge and skills in diagnosis, treatment, vaccinations, surveillance and outbreak response.
