Australia gives PNG's National Library a facelift as a 30th anniversary gift

19:26 pm on 1 September 2005

Australia will pay for a facelift to Papua New Guinea's National Library as part of its 30th anniversary gift to its closest neighbour.

The library was Australia's original gift to PNG on independence in 1975.

The refurbishment will include the maintenance of the building's infrastructure and measures to help foster links between the National Library and libraries in Australia.

Australia will also help pay for an exhibition rugby league match between PNG's national team, the Kumuls, and an Australian Prime Minister's XIII, to be played in Port Moresby on September 18.
