Federated Farmers organises earthquake support

09:41 am on 24 February 2011

Federated Farmers says it is organising support and accommodation for Christchurch people who have been left homeless by the devastating earthquake.

The organisation says it has arranged for rugby clubs in the Selwyn district to open their doors to those that have been displaced by the quake to enable them to have a shower and something to eat.

Federated Farmers spokesperson John Hartnell says rural residents are also offering their homes as temporary accommodation.

John Hartnell says some farmland in the Halswall and Tai Tapu areas has suffered minor liquefaction but overall there is little damage to rural areas of Canterbury.

Following the 4 September earthquake, more than 100 grain silos collapsed, but farmers say at this stage there are no reports of silo damage.

Fonterra dairy co-operative has freed up 34 milk tankers to carry water into Christchurch.
