A whale is believed to have died after beaching itself about two hours after it was rescued on the Coromandel Peninsula.
The Fire Service says it helped with the whale's rescue at Simpsons Beach in Whitianga about 3pm on Wednesday.
However, it says the whale beached itself again on a different part of the beach and has since died.
