Another union, the EPMU, has already endorsed Mr Little, who is vying for the job with Grant Robertson, David Parker and Nanaia Mahuta.

The union's national secretary, Chris Flatt, said its support of Mr Little is based on his deep involvement with union members and working people over many years, and on the experience he brings from outside Parliament in leadership roles with the EPMU and as president of the Labour Party.

The contest was triggered by the resignation of leader David Cunliffe a week after the general election on 20 September, in which Labour's share of the vote fell to an historic low of just over 25 percent.
