A truck carrying cows flipped on State Highway 3 in Taranaki this morning.
The crash happened about 7.30am on Mountain Road, Sentry Hill.
The police said the driver was not hurt, and vets came to the scene to care for injured animals.
Fire and Emergency said it helped free some cattle from the trailer and also assisted police with traffic control.
Animal welfare group Taranaki Animal Save said one of its representatives on the scene described it as "like something from a horror movie".
"Looking into the eyes of the animals it was clear to see their immense pain and distress," said Matt Coffey from the group.
Taranaki Animal Save said some of the animals died.
