Auckland Council's animal management team is investigating a dog attack that left a child hospitalised over the weekend.

Police were called to the incident on Farringdon Street in Glen Innes around 2.30am on Sunday morning.

The animal management team manager Elly Waitoa said an investigation was underway to locate the dog and its owner.

Waitoa said council had previously received reports of dogs roaming in the area and had done patrols and spoken to owners in some instances.

She said roaming dogs may be impounded and subject to fines for non-compliance.

Animal management said should a member of the public encounter a dog acting aggressively, it asked that they retreat to a safe place and contact its call centre on 09 301 0101 to report the issue immediately.
