20:34 pm on 17 January 2019

A 70-year-old is dead and four people including an infant are injured after a four-vehicle crash that closed part of Waikato's State Highway 1B this afternoon.

Police say a small car crossed into the northbound lane after a nose-to-tail in the southbound lane and was struck by a ute towing a trailer.

The 70-year-old was a passenger in the car and died at the scene.

The car's driver and an infant, as well as two people from other vehicles, were taken to hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The crash happened just before 2pm in northern Waikato, police said.

Diversions were in place, as the road was closed between the Taupiri roundabout and the Gordonton Road roundabout, but SH1B reopened just after 6pm.

The Serious Crash Unit was examining the scene and police would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash.
