New Zealand's largest software company Orion Health has bought hospital software assets from Microsoft for an undisclosed sum.

Orion Health specialises in healthcare software and turned over $100 million this year.

Its chief executive Ian McCrae says the Microsoft purchase completes its offer, meaning it can provide all healthcare software to hospitals.

He says the deal is part of the company's plan to reach $1 billion in turnover in the next five to eight years.

Mr McCrae says the size of the health IT market worldwide is probably more than $50 billion dollars and the company can now compete for a far greater share of that money.

He says Orion Health will first focus on expanding its reach in the Asia Pacific region and will add 200 people to its 500 strong staff over the next year.
