The American Samoa department of health is investigating possible cases of zika in the territory.
It says there are no confirmed cases, but the need to monitor the mosquito-borne virus is necessary after zika has found to be present in other Pacific nations.
The department says symptoms of zika include mild fever, rash, conjunctivitis and muscle pain.
It has urged residents to keep their surroundings clean and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes by draining outdoor containers and spraying themselves with mosquito repellent.
