Fijian Prime Minister Sitiven Rabuka has made a surprising announcement that "some members" from his ruling People's Alliance Party are planning to break away and form a new political party.

"I'm aware that some members of the People's Alliance Party are planning to form a new political party ahead of the 2026 general elections," Rabuka said via a Facebook post on Wednesday night.

Rabuka said the People's Alliance remained strong, united, and fully committed to delivering on its promises to the Fijian people.

"We will not be distracted. Our focus is clear, and our mission continues."

Rabuka, along with the National Federation Party (Nfp) and the Social, Democratic, Liberal Party (Sodelpa), leads a three-party coalition government, which came into power in December 2022.
