Don't panic, Fijians told as tsunami sirens get tested

Emergency management authorities in Fiji are urging people not to panic and saying they do not need to do anything when the country's tsunami sirens are tested today at 11am local time.

However, companies and offices are encouraged to use the siren tests to practice their evacuation procedures and make sure staff are aware of their designated tsunami escape routes and safe assembly zones.

The emergency management team said in the event of a real tsunami, the sirens will be used alongside emergency alerts sent to mobile phones.

And there will also be official warnings broadcast on radio, TV and shared on social media.

The areas which will be affected by today's tests include; Water Authority's Kinoya Sewerage Plant, FINTEL, RFMF Officers Training School at Vatuwaqa, USP Statham, The main and lower campuses at Laucala, My Suva Park, FNU Nasese, iTaukei Affairs, SCC Civic Car Park Rooftop, Biosecurity, Renown Street - Suva Central, Government Shipping Services - Walu Bay and Lami Town.
