A friend of a New Zealander believed to have been two days into a tramp to Mt Everest Base Camp fears for his safety after not hearing from him since Nepal's devastating earthquake 10 days ago.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the well-being of about 260 New Zealanders in Nepal, with only a few people unaccounted for.

Paul Murray said he was concerned about Peter Curreen, 63, from Marlborough.
He described Mr Curreen as resourceful and loved by his community.
"The nature of the fellow - it's likely that he's just thrown himself into helping other people, that's who he is, really, so he's probably oblivious that anyone over here's worried about him at all, but we are.
"We are concerned, and we hope to hear from him as soon as possible."
The pair had been involved in the Living in Peace Project, a sustainable tourism and permaculture community at Karamea.
