An investigation is underway into the death of a 19-year-old remand prisoner at Invercargill Prison.
A spokesperson for the Coroner said the death is being treated as a suspected suicide.
Police officers, including a police photographer, went to the prison at 7.30am on 27 September.
Prison director Daryl Tamati said there was no indication that the teen's death was suspicious.
"Our staff made every effort to save him, however they were unable to revive him."
Tamati said other men in the unit and staff were being provided with support, including access to chaplains and cultural support.
"Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends," he said.
A report has been prepared for the coroner, who will rule on the cause of death and whether the individual's name is released to media.
An investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate will also be carried out.
