Smaller Guam marines' build up means it could happen sooner - Guam official

The director of the Guam administration's Military Buildup Office, Mark Calvo, says US troops transferring from Japan could arrive at a quicker pace over a more reduced time frame than under the original 2006 plan.

Mr Calvo says the United States government has confirmed 4,700 troops will move to Guam, about half the number outlined in the original agreement between the United States and Japan.

He says the administration is still waiting for details of the force's composition and how many dependants will be coming with the troops.

"The timelines that initially were discussed - four years and then eventually agreed to extend to possibly eight years - we may see that timeline compressed. It just depends on the type of units that they agree on and the type of buildings that they will be occupying here so we can construct them."
