Increasing number of cyclists on capital's roads

The number of people cycling to work in Wellington has almost doubled in recent years, prompting calls for further investment in cycle routes across the region.

According to Wellington City Council figures, the average number of cyclists in the central city during morning rush-hour has grown to 1733, from 906 in 2006.

Cycling Advocates Network spokesperson Patrick Morgan says more facilities are needed to meet demand and keep the cyclists safe.

Mr Morgan is calling for planned city council and Transport Agency investments, such as cycle routes and installing bike racks on buses.

He says more people cycling gives motorists more space on the roads and the situation is a win-win for everyone.
