MP Patrick Pruaitch had filled the role for the past two years but this week he joined the coalition government of James Marape.
With Mr Pruaitch's National Alliance now sitting in government, Mr Namah's PNG Party is the main party left in the opposition.
This means the former deputy prime minister returns to the opposition leader role he held between 2012 and 2014.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the People's National Congress (PNC) party of former prime minister Peter O'Neill will leave the government.
Mr Marape last month requested the party leave his coalition and join the opposition, accusing Mr O'Neill of undermining his leadership.
However, the PNC, which is the second biggest party in parliament and has eight ministerial portfolios, said it remained part of government.
