French Polynesia's pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira Party has held its congress to announce some of its candidates for next month's territorial elections.

The move suggests that the party won't boycott the election, something that had been threatened by its leader Oscar Temaru last month.

The party had in January asked for people to come forward as candidates and according to Mr Temaru, 148 people applied for the 73 positions at disposal.

The tenative lists included long-serving members as well as newcomers.

The congress was also attended by pro-independence politicians from New Caledonia lobbying for international backing ahead of the independence referendum due later this year.

In the last election in 2013, the pro-independence camp won 10 of the 57 seats.
