The authorities in New Caledonia say they will not allow any mass drinking in public to go ahead in Noumea this weekend.
The French high commission has issued a statement to say that it, the city of Noumea and the Southern province have agreed that any such event is not allowed to proceed.
There have been press reports that a so-called giant apero is to be organised in line with mass heavy drinking events that have been held in several European countries.
Noumea regularly restricts the sale of alcohol at weekends or public holidays to help maintain public order.
