The New Zealand rugby sevens side has been beaten by South Africa in the final of the Las Vegas tournament and in doing so have lost their lead to their old rivals in the IRB series.

South Africa defended their Las Vegas title with a 14-7 win over New Zealand after it was 7-all at half time.

The result means South Africa is now top of the standings, 1 point ahead of New Zealand.

In the semi-finals South Africa beat Samoa and New Zealand beat Canada.

New Zealand hasn't beaten South Africa in an IRB sevens tournament since 2012.

The 5th round of the series is in Wellington in just under a fortnight.
