21:09 pm on 3 November 2005

Fiji police have been put on high alert after the latest terrorist threat in Australia announced by the prime minister, John Howard.

Radio Fiji quotes the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, as saying he has briefed all departments on the threat.

Mr Hughes says they are tackling the threat at all levels beginning with prevention which is the most important.

He says there are two primary areas; the Special Branch who have a network of contacts in the community and also the community policing operations which will pick up on any unusual activity around the country.

Mr Hughes says the Police Tactical Response Team is ready to tackle any incident in Fiji with assistance as necessary from the military.

He says security has also been stepped up at ports of entry into Fiji.
