A man has drowned after being swept out to sea while fishing at the Clarence river mouth in Kaikoura.

Emergency services were alerted just before 10am today after the 50-year-old was hit by a wave and washed away while fishing with a friend.
He was seen floating for some time, before disappearing.
His body has been recovered by a local fisherman and returned to Kaikoura.
