Fiji Law Society appalled at attack claims

07:06 am on 9 December 2015

The Fiji Law Society has urged respect for the rule of law following claims by a Lautoka lawyer he and his associates have been threatened and people close to him attacked.

Aman Ravindra-Singh says security forces were behind the attacks because he is acting for dozens of people accused of sedition.

The Society says no matter how unpopular the client's cause, lawyers are duty bound to act in their clients' best interests and it hopes the matter is investigated.

The Law Society's Laurel Vaurasi says it is appalling and disgraceful to hear of such conduct.

"We do not agree with any intimidation of whatever sort, for any lawyer that's representing his clients. I mean no lawyer should be subject to such violence, or intimidation or any such behaviour."

Ms Vaurasi says members of the Law Society have turned out in support of Mr Ravindra-Singh this week.

Fiji's acting Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho has told the Fiji website Fiji Village the police will definitely investigate Mr Ravindra-Singh's claims.

Mr Ravindra-Singh says he intended to report the matter to the police this week.
