A man who has historic child sex convictions has been jailed for seven-and-a half years on new charges.
Kenneth O'Reilly, 65, was sentenced in the Wellington High Court on Friday on a sexual assault charge relating to a boy in the 1960s and a charge of indecently assaulting of a man between 2006 and 2008.
O'Reilly's sexual assault convictions span nearly 50 years from 1962 to 2008.
The Crown originally sought preventive detention, but O'Reilly's lawyer Mike Antunovic argued that a finite sentence should be imposed due to his client's age.
Justice Kos told the court he did not impose preventive detention, because he was not satisfied that O'Reilly would pose a threat of reoffending when released.
O'Reilly will be 71 by the time he can apply for parole.
