Recount ordered in PNG's Western Highlands election

15:16 pm on 17 March 2008

A former Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Paias Wingti, has won a court battle to re-count votes from last year's election where rival Tom Olga ousted him as governor.

The National Court has ordered a recount of ballot boxes that were not originally counted in Western Highlands Province during the 2007 elections.

Sir Paias, who served as prime minister between 1985 and 1988 and again from 1992 to 1994, alleged errors and omissions by the security and electoral officials.

The court case found electoral officials failed to count five ballots boxes that contained thousands of votes.

Sir Paias also accused officials of inflating Mr Olga's tally by 5,000 votes.

The National Court has ordered the recount to happen before April the 14th.
