The family of an Auckland man who died a violent death says the people who know how or why he died need to come forward.

The body of 32-year-old Lee Ross McMurdo was found by family members at his Helensville home, north of Auckland, three weeks ago.

On Friday, Bruce McMurdo stood outside his son's home with his wife Sue to ask for the public's help.

Mr McMurdo spoke of a man who loved sport and was a kind and generous person.

He acknowledged his son had been struggling with some issues and alluded to a problem with drugs.

The officer in charge of the homicide case, Inspector Detective Greg Cramer, says a black wallet and a flat screen television are missing from Lee McMurdo's home.

Mr Cramer says police believe the Helensville community holds the clues to solving the crime.
