Our guide of where to go, what to see and a couple of other things to spend the weekend catching up on.
Shonen Knife: Japanese pop punk trio, Shonen Knife, kicked off their New Zealand tour yesterday and continue with shows over the next few days in Leigh, Wellington and Christchurch. Tickets are available online through Under The Radar and you can watch the video for their single 'Bad Luck Song', from their 19th album Overdrive, below.
Flying Lotus: After a brilliant close out performance at Laneway on Monday, and a just as epic sideshow at the Powerstation last night, Flying Lotus plays his last New Zealand show at Wellington's Shed 6 tonight. Tickets are still available from Ticketek and support comes from JPS and Tom McGuinness.
Foxcatcher: Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Director (Bennett Miller), Best Actor (Steve Carell) and Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Foxcatcher finally lands in local cinemas today. Watch the trailer here.
Super Bowl: Local coverage of Super Bowl XLIX, between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, begins on ESPN at midday this Monday. A good day to call in sick to work, we think.
Chelsea Jade and Randa: Chelsea Jade will be performing songs from her latest EP, Beacons, this Friday at Golden Dawn. Randa plays support. $5 cover charge on the door.
Light Show: Auckland Art Gallery's Light Show, which came via a sell out season at London's Hayward Gallery, closes on Sunday February 8 with extended opening hours this coming weekend. Tickets are available on the day from the gallery's main desk, or online through Eventfinda.
Bachelorette, Orchestra of Spheres and Stef Animal: Bachelorette, aka. Annabel Alpers, is back and playing her first Wellington show in three years this Saturday at Meow. She shares the bill with Stef Animal and Orchestra of Spheres, and tickets are available from Under The Radar or at the door.
Taite Music Prize: The longlist for this year's Taite Music Prize, the winner of which will be revealed at an Auckland event in mid-April, has just been announced. We recommend spending some time catching up on the nominees, starting with Team Dynamite's excellent Shepherd's Delight.
