American Samoa's former governor, Aifili Paulo Lutali, has died in hospital at the age of 82.

AP Lutali died with his wife, children and grandchildren by his side in the early hours of this morning.

He had been admitted to hospital in Pago Pago on Monday after what the family said was a mild stroke.

AP Lutali was governor from 1985 to 88 and again from 1993 to 96.

He was also the territory's representative in Washington.

He is credited with a major expansion of American Samoa's infrastructure.
