A Hawaii Senator has introduced a bill aimed at improving the education of native people of US states and territories.

Daniel Akaka says the measure promotes the teaching of culture and language in schools.

He says it also deals with local control, parental involvement and teacher training and development.

Mr Akaka says he wants to reverse the trend of native students often suffering from low graduation rates and poor academic performance.
