Changes to be made to TVNZ charter

Television New Zealand will no longer have to provide public service programming under changes to the TVNZ charter introduced to Parliament by the Government on Wednesday.

The previous Labour Government made it a requirement for TVNZ to broadcast locally-made programmes that would not have been shown according to purely commercial objectives.

Maori programming was a key part.

But an amendment bill will require TVNZ only to provide quality programmes that are relevant to New Zealanders and reflect Maori perspectives.
