When the fulltime whistle blows in a Wellington football match on Sunday, the score could be in the thousands.

Twenty-eight people are attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous football match by playing for 45 hours straight, starting at 1pm on Friday.

The footballers are raising money for the More Than A Game charity, sending proceeds to Gumboot Friday.

More Than A Game co-founder Graham Matheson told Morning Report players would be on the indoor field for four hours at a time, with a four hour break.

There will definitely be people counting the score, Matheson said.

"Put it this way, I built the livestream and I made sure the digits go up to four on each side."

Sticking to a continuos game is key, he said.

"It's got to be a continuous game and it has to be played in the nature of football so we are trying to play a game where we're taking it a bit seriously but nah we're not going in for those 50 50s and trying to get the ball over anything."

The game will be refereed for the full 45 hours.

"I'm not trying to focus on who's winning, I think we've all won once we get the record or once we hit the final whistle."
