A hostile drink driver and a 63-year-old lying in a drain near an overturned car were among 36 people caught in Waikato for excess breath alcohol during the weekend.
Officers had to to try 19 times to get a full breath test from one belligerent driver, Waikato police said.
In another incident, a drunk 63-year-old man lying in a drain near an overturned car refused a blood test or breath test, resisted officers and spat on them before he was finally arrested.
Officers also dealt with a number of speeding drivers, including a 23-year-old forbidden driver clocked at 183km/h. The man was arrested and his car impounded.
