Scott Watson court action dropped

08:14 am on 15 March 2014

Convicted double-murderer Scott Watson has withdrawn court action against the head of the Department of Corrections, Crown Law Office has confirmed.

Watson is serving a minimum non-parole period of 17 years after being convicted in 1999 for the murders of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope.

Earlier this year his legal team filed documents in the High Court in Christchurch in an attempt to force the department to make a decision on whether to allow a meeting between Watson, Olivia Hope's father Gerald Hope, and a journalist.

The papers claimed Corrections was delaying a decision on the matter because Watson wanted the media present.

A Crown Law spokesperson says the court action against Corrections chief executive Ray Smith has been withdrawn.

The Corrections Department says it is still in discussion with the parties involved about a meeting.
