Dog attack puts toddler in hospital

A three-year-old boy is in a stable condition in hospital after a dog mauled his face in Bay of Plenty.

The Western Bay District Council is investigating the incident which happened at a property in Te Puke yesterday afternoon.

The toddler was taken to Tauranga Hospital after being bitten on the face.

He has since been moved to Waikato Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

Council spokesperson Frank Begley said the dog, which is understood to be unregistered, has been seized, and will be with animal control until the investigation is completed.

He said the dog's owner, who was out of town yesterday, will be spoken to today.

Police are also investigating the incident.
