New Solomons tourism resort still at concept stage

The head of the provincial government on Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands says plans to develop a tourism resort west of the capital Honiara are still at the concept stage.

A satellite cultural village built at Doma for the Festival of Pacific Arts in July was favoured by many festival-goers because of its rural, seaside location.

Doma is also where a new campus for the University of the South Pacific is to be built.

The Guadalcanal premier Anthony Veke says the cultural village will be incorporated into the resort, which a technical team is designing.

"So we actually want to see some kind of hotel, a major hotel development which we think can compliment the natural environment that we have on the site."

Anthony Veke says private investors have shown interest in building the hotel but the provincial government has not been in contact with any of them yet.
