Effect of expulsion from Fiji not yet determined

08:46 am on 29 December 2008

New Zealand officials say it's too early to predict what effect the expulsion of the acting High Commissioner to Fiji, Caroline McDonald, will have on diplomatic services in Fiji.

Ms McDonald arrived back in New Zealand on Sunday afternoon. She was declared persona non grata on 23 December.

She is due to meet Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully in a few days for a full debriefing.

Ms McDonald's husband, Simon Mark, was New Zealand's trade commissioner in Fiji and he too has returned home.

Mr McCully says the New Zealand defence attache has also left and Fiji's interim government will not permit a replacement.

New Zealand expects to face a similar situation in a few weeks when a police attache leaves Fiji.

New Zealand's previous High Commissioner, Michael Green, was also expelled in June 2007.

The New Zealand visa office in Fiji issues 35,000 visas per year, primarily to Fijian nationals, but also to people from Kiribati and Tuvalu.
