The school where a five-year-old boy was killed while playing on a stack of logs says it was a school staff member who stacked the wood.
The boy has been named as Glen Eric Takaro Temiha-Barlow.
He was playing with a group of children who were jumping on the logs at Motueka High School when one dislodged and rolled onto him, killing him instantly.
Police and the Department of Labour are investigating.
The chair of the school's board of trustees, Ian Palmer, says contractors cut down the trees because they were unsafe, but it was a staff member who stacked the logs a couple of metres high.
Acting Senior Sergeant Rob Crawford told Morning Report the school had felled some trees that were considered dangerous, and had chopped them up for removal on Friday.
