20:33 pm on 24 October 2007

Four Papuan refugees have been charged with willfully murdering a senior Papua New Guinean magistrate, Ivo Cappo.

Mr Cappo drove into the camp of 87 Papuan Refugees in front of the United Nations Refugee office in Port Moresby downtown earlier this week, where he was allegedly stoned to death.

The refugees settled there after they were evicted from their previous camp at the 8 mile squatter settlement in the capital, where many of them lived for over twenty years.

Superintendent Fred Yakasa says the investigation is underway and police have charged four Papuan men over the alleged killing.

"At this point in time we have completed our preliminary investigations. We have four suspects arrested and charged for willful murder."

Superintendent Fred Yakasa says the motive of the alleged killing is not yet known.

Superintendent Yakasa says the remaining Papuan refugees are being held at the Boroko police station for their own safety.
