'Worst nightmare': How Dallas shooting unfolded

Five officers have been shot dead in Texas during a protest against the police shootings of two black men in Minnesota and Louisiana.

• At least two snipers in elevated positions fired "ambush-style" on the officers.
• Eleven officers were shot during or after the protest, and five have died.
• Police were negotiating with an armed male suspect inside a parking garage in downtown Dallas, with local media reporting late on Friday (NZT) that the suspect was dead.
• At least three other people were in custody: two people who were travelling in a Mercedes stopped by officers, and a woman who had been in or near the garage.
• In an earlier statement, police said a person was in custody after a shoot-out with SWAT officers. It was unclear if that person was one of the four mentioned above.
